Kasargod is located in the Northern part ofKerala. The place is known for its hand loom and coir industry. This is a land of seven languages and several cultures. The Malayalam spoken here has influences from Tulu, Kannada, Urdu, Konkani etc. People from southern kerala generally find it difficult to understand the Malayalam spoken here. Kasargod is a spectacular showcase of two distinct cultural streams representing Kerala and Karnataka. While Kerala’s rich folk. culture finds its splendid expression in the Theyyam and kaliyattam dances, Karnataka’s folk dance drama Yakshagana is part of Kasargod’s own tradition too.It is still untouched by its urban lifestyle, because of its natural beauty it is becoming a popular tourist attraction.
Cricket, Communism, Cakes
Marco Polo called it a great spice emporium. Many believe it is the ancient port of Naura from where King Solomon collected timber to build the great Temple of Jerusalem. In more recent times Kannur became the cradle offour Cs: Communism, Cakes, Circus and Cricket!

Kannur is bounded by the Western Ghats in the east and the Lakshwadeep Sea in the west. It showcases some beautiful sandy beaches, the longest one being at Payyambalam. This beach is famous for its flat stretches of sand and the well laid gardens which are also abode to the souls of the famous personalties EK Nayanar and AK Gopalan, the communist party leaders of yester years.Kerala’s Communist Party which created history in 1957 by becoming the first to come to power democratically in the country was born in the politically conscious Kannur. Thanks to the English who made it its military headquarters in the Indian west coast in the 18′” century, Kannur learnt from Brits many things including playing cricket and baking cakes. Kannur was among the first places in India where the English played cricket (Former English captain Colin Cowdrey had his first cricketing lessons in Kannur). Colonel Arthur Wellesley of the Waterloo fame is credited to have started playing cricket in Thalassery town after he was posted here as the Commander-in-Chief ofthe British forces of Malabar and Kanara districts.

Even today the best cakes in Kerala are made by the descendents of the early bakers ofKannur who had learnt the art from the colonial masters. The best circus artistes of India too had their origins in this coastal port town dating back to the 19th century. Kerala’s only Muslim royal family -Arakkal Raja- too had its home in Kannur. Marks of such rich and varied tradition like forts, martyr columns, temples, churches continue to attract global travelers to Kannur.

Kannur is home for many other splendid Kerala traditions too; theyyam, the spectacular folk dance, Kaithari, traditional hand loom fabrics and Kalaripayat, the celebrated martial arts.

Sandwiched by Western Ghats in the east and Arabian sea in the west, Kannur is one of nature’s most blessed regions too with serene beaches, uninhabited islands, forest ranges and hills.

Rice Bowl
Palakkad (or Palghat) district has a fascinating geographical location. This land locked region consists of a lush plateau with luxuriant mountains of the Western Ghats to the north and south. The foothills of the Ghats lie to the west and the southern tip ofthe Deccan Plateau rises to the east. Called the ‘Pal ghat Gap’, the area lies in a wide passage in the Western Ghats. Fresh waters from the surrounding mountains flow into the fertile plains of Plaghat
district. This major rice growing area is called the ‘Rice Granary ofKerala’.

Malapuram, literally a land atop hills is enriched by the three great rivers- Chaliyar, Kadalundi and Bharathapuzha and is an extensively forested land which shelters the wolrd’s oldest teak plantation and bamboo woods. Malapuram was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times and then later the headquarters of European and British troops which then became the headquarters of the Malabar Special Police (MSP). Once the

military headquarters of Malabar’s most powerful royalty -the Zamorins-, Malappuram is known for its armed uprisings of the past led by the brave Muslims -known as Moplahs- against the British colonial masters. Another stellar example for the region’s nationalist pride is the Mamangam, an ancient festival to celebrate the local king and his brave army’s resistance against the imperialist designs of the region’s powerful Zamorin kings. Ironically, this legacy of blood and violence is juxtaposed with Malappuram’s tradition as a seat of high spiritual learning and philosophy both of Hindu and Islamic. The state’s only Muslim-dominated district, the Islamic pilgrim centre ofPonnani here is known as Mecca of the East. It is a tribute for kerala’s splendid secular tradition and religious harmony that some of the highest Nampoothiri (Kerala Brahmin) schools and practicing centres of the Hindu Vedic knowledge too are situated in Malappuram. Malappuram has a large number of prominent mosques and temples. The ancient port town of Ponnani once a favored haunt for traders from Arabia has about 50 mosques now. The 600-year old Juma Masjid which looks much like a Hindu temple, is believed to have been built by Zainudeen Ibn bin Muhammed, a descendent of an Arab theologian who visited the region. Mounathul Islamic Sabha at Ponnani, revered mausoleums of Muslim spiritual leaders etc make Ponnani as Kerala’s nerve centre of Islamic culture. The villages on the bank of Nil a (Bharathappuzha) river are home to some of the ancient Vedic schools run by Namboodiri scholars. A centuries-old competition for excellence in Vedic chanting continues to be held here -Kadavllur- every year even today. The Tirunavaya Brahmaswom madhom an ancient Vedic school is located in Tavanu. A certain form Vedic chanting survives only among the Nampoothiri scholars of the villages here. District is home to some of the ancient and hallowed Hindu temples like Tirunavaya, Tirumandhamkunnu, Kadampuzha too. Some of the greatest devotional poets in Malayalam, Thunchath Ezhuthassan, Poonthanam and Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri hailed from here. The state’s premier Ayurveda hospital -the century old Aryavaidya sala- is located in Kottakkal, 12 km southwest ofMalappuram.

Rail: Ernakulam Junction

Jewel in crown

The old and new magnificently straddle this land. Dubbed the Queen of Arabian Sea, Kochi is the coastal district’s heart. The state’s modern

commercial capital, the district’s various trading locations have attracted sea faring merchants and travelers from as distant as Rome, China and Arabia since 3000 years ago. Subsequently colonial powers like the Portuguese, Dutch and also English have built the land their major destination which still bears the indelible marks of this legacy. Kochi is also one of the earliest homes for a miniscule Jewish community which though has numerically depleted still survives the ravages of time. The Jew town and its 5 centuries- old synagogue, the Chinese fishing nets, the Dutch Palace, cemetery, Portuguese church etc have made Kochi the state’s most sought after destination for heritage tourism. One of the most developed districts, it boasts of many factories ofthe old and new variety besides a spew of shopping malls and other commercial centers. However the cosmopolitan district’s largest earner and employer is its modem port-Cochin Port- headquartered in the beautiful man made Willingdon Island and its natural harbor. The district also has its customary share of pilgrim centers, beaches and jungles as well. Cherai beach bordering Vypeen Island where one comes across dolphins and also-the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Thattekkad are popular destinations.

Arrival and Information:-The Cochin international airport is located at Nedumbassery, and is well connected to all the major cities in India. There are 2 main railways, Emakulam Junction and Ernakularn Town, but there aren’t any trains to Fort Cochin or Mattancherry.

There are KSRTC buses to all the other cities in Kerala and there are long distance buses to other states as well. Within the city there are autos and local buses.lndia tourism’s main office is situated on Willingdon Island and is open from Monday to Friday between 9 am to 5.30 pm and on Saturday 9am to noon. The Kerala Department of Tourism office next to the Government Jetty in Fort Cochin give out information and maps those are very helpful.

Can’t Miss
Fort Kochi: – Walk through history. One of India’s earliest European townships as every speck in this heritage destination bears marks of the hoary past. Once an obscure fishing village this became one of the earliest European township in the country. The site for the synagogue was gifted to the Jews by the 16th-century Travancore king, Bhaskara Ravi Varma, who belonged to the dynasty of the Perumpadappu Swarupa maharajahs. The synagaogue lies right next to the king’s palace and temple, illustrating the strong ties that the Jewish community had with the royalty of the time The Paradesi or foreigners’ synagogue was built in 1568 with the money pooled in by four rich Jews who had chosen Kochi as their home: Samuel Castiel, David Beleliah, Ephraim Salla and Joseph Levi. Partially burnt down by the Portuguese in 1662, it was rebuilt by Shem-Tov Castiel. The bell tower with a clock was built in 1760 and the unique blue and white Chinese floor tiles were laid in 1762 by Ezekiel Rahabi, principal merchant of the Dutch East India Company. Today there are just 10 Jews in Jew Town, and they make up a part of the 50-odd Jews who reside in Kerala.
